The distance which allows a traveller to break his fasting and shorten his prayers is approximately 80 km according to the view of the majority of scholars. This distance is called travelling according to the custom of the Muslims. So if a person travels by camel, car, plane or ship, for this distance or more, he is regarded as a traveller.

There is no doubt that not fasting whilst travelling is allowed in the Shari`ah and is a concession granted by Allah. Those drivers who spend their lives on the road can break their fast even if travelling is their profession.

These are the valid reasons for breaking the fast during Ramadan: 1- sickness, 2- traveling, 3 - pregnancy and breastfeeding, 4- senility and old age, 5- intense hunger and thirst, and 6- compulsion.
