The basic ruling is that one should drink while sitting, which is better, but one may drink while standing. The Prophet did both to demonstrate that there is a lot of room for manoeuvre in this matter.

Prophet Muhammad said: “When any one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand, because the devil eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.” Therefore, the one who uses his left hand to eat and drink should be taught the Islamic ruling and should be reminded of this Hadith.
