The life in al-barzakh starts after death and ends when the Hour begins. Quranic verses and hadiths indicate that the torment of the grave is real and that it is ongoing in the case of some people.

The life of the deceased in the grave is different from his life in this world. It is a special kind of life in al-barzakh (the interval between his death and the Day of Resurrection) which is not like his life in this world.
