Al-Manaahi al-Lafziyyah (forbidden expressions)
Is Saying Good Luck Prohibited?
When people say ‘good luck’ and the like, as a kind of supplication for the person to whom it is said, and wishing him well, there is nothing wrong with that, as is obvious. In fact, it is praiseworthy because it is a kind of supplication for good and wishing the Muslims well. But one should not wish or pray for bad luck for a Muslim, because this involves transgression and enmity towards one’s brother in faith.152,876The saying “An hour for the Lord and an hour for yourself”
1,407Does the blessing mentioned in the verse {And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied} include all the ummah?
2,124What is the ruling on saying, “May the angels of the Most Gracious say Bismillah over you”?
There does not seem to be anything wrong with this phrase, and there is nothing to dictate that one should be strict about it or tell off anyone who says it. But saying “May the angels pray for forgiveness for you, and the like,” is more appropriate and is better.2,247Is it permissible to call something “haleem”?
Giving a name such as this to this type of food is like a metaphor, and there is no reason to think that it is sharing a name with Allah, may He be exalted.4,857The connection between provision (rizq) and death
8,836Is it permissible to say, “My pride does not allow me to do such and such”?
3,463Ruling on some people saying “Time is treacherous”
2,912Can it be said of the deceased that he is in the care of Allah?
There is nothing wrong with saying of a believer who has died that he is under the care of Allah, although this protection is not unique to the deceased, as we have noted from the hadith quoted above that the one who prays Fajr is under the care of Allah. For more details, please see the long answer.3,809Ruling on saying “Life is no good”
It is proven that it is prohibited to inveigh against time, and the reason for this prohibition is that this inveighing includes one of two grave evils: by saying this, the one who is inveighing is either attributing the creation of events to time, in which case he is associating something else with Allah, may He be exalted, or he believes that these events, for which he is inveighing against time, are decreed by Allah, may He be exalted, in which case he is condemning Allah, may He be exalted – we ask Allah to protect us from that. The reason for the prohibition mentioned above is not applicable in the case of saying “Life is not good,” so there is nothing wrong with saying that or condemning this world, by way of highlighting how insignificant it is and how bad it is to be distracted by it from seeking the pleasure of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, and by way of [??] feeling sad for what one misses out on of its glamour and gains.3,405
