Swearing an oath by raising the hand – is it considered to be an oath?

Question: 26870

I want to ask you about the way non-Muslims swear an oath, and is it considered to be an oath (qasm) if a Muslim does it? For example, if he raises his hand and says “This information is true”, is that considered to be an oath or not? Please explain. May Allaah reward you with good.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

An oath is not considered to be an oath unless it is sworn by one of the names of Allaah or by one of His attributes. Raising the hand is not an oath whether that is done by Muslims or others.

 And Allaah knows best.
