The Sunnah tells us that the reward for memorising the names of Allah is admission to Paradise. The Prophet said: “Allah has ninety-nine names. Whoever memorises them will enter Paradise.”

Perhaps the view that is most likely to be correct is the view that the greatest name is “Allah,” because this is the one name which encompasses all the other names and attributes of Allah and it is a name that was never given to anyone other than Allah.

Al-‘Aziz (the Almighty) is one of the names of Allah, and al-‘izzah (might), which is one of the attributes of Allah, has three meanings: ‘izzah in the sense that no one can harm Him, ‘izzah in the sense of subduing and controlling others, and ‘izzah in the sense of might and power. All of these attributes belong to Allah, may He be exalted, in the most perfect and complete sense.

The creed of Ahl As-Sunnah wal Jama`ah regarding the attributes of Allah is that they affirm them and affirm the meanings indicated by the words in linguistic terms, and they leave knowledge of how the attributes are and their nature to Him, while believing that we cannot compare any of the divine Attributes to the attributes of created beings, for there is none like unto Him either in His Essence or in His attributes.

It is obligatory to believe in the names and attributes that Allah has affirmed for Himself and what His Messenger has affirmed of that, without asking how, likening Him to His creation, distorting the meaning or denying any of it.
